The area of Otwani, situated halfway between Sesfontein and Opuwo, is mainly populated by the Ovaherero people. During South African rule, this region was part of the Kaokoland homeland. People here mainly make a living through pastoralism, and so seek access to local livestock sales markets, though there is also a partial integration of this area into the labour market.
